What is Aromatherapy?

Our lead therapist holds a degree in aromatherapy massage therapy.  

Aromatherapy is a misleading name for a beautiful treatment.  It is not just the smell of the essential oils that is beneficial for your treatment, but also the application to the skin.  

It is a practice rooted in history going back for thousands of years, where the only options available for health and well-being were derived from herbs and plants available nearby.  Now we have the ability to concentrate these plants and herbs into essential oils for the use of health management.  

Whilst we now have medicines to create differences in the body, they do not work for everyone.  If you are suffering from: aches, pains, swelling, difficulty breathing, hormone imbalance etc, then perhaps aromatherapy would be useful and natural alternative for you.   

Be sure to advise your therapist of any pre-existing medical conditions or areas to avoid before they begin your treatment. 

  • Athletes in preparation for, or following a sporting events.
  • As part of rehabilitation following an injury.
  • Those with muscle cramps and aches.
  • Hormonal problems i.e. menopause, post pregnancy, PMT.
  • Skin problems, such as eczema, psoriasis, etc
  • Anxiety, depression, many mental health problems
  • Those with general massage contraindications, including
  • open wounds,
  • broken bones,
  • bursitis,
  • periostitis,
  • myositis ossifications,
  • skin infections,
  • thrombosis or bleeding disorders.
  • Pregnant Women

What to expect?

Before an aromatherapy massage your therapist will do a detailed consultation with you.  As we are adding extra specific oils to your treatment this is very important.  This will include skin type, mood and physical ailments.  An aromatherapy massage is typically a lighter treatment.  However this does not always need to be the case.  At Willow Massage Centre we are happy to do a deep tissue/sports massage treatment, and enhance that work with aromatherapy to gain better results.  

The best advice is to leave the oils on as long as possible to allow them to be as effective as possible.  Ensure you get adequate rest and drink plenty of water.  

Like every other therapy it should never be painful.

Let your therapist know if you are experiencing discomfort and they can ease off the pressure or avoid certain areas if needed.

However typically aromatherapy massage therapy is a lighter treatment as we let the oils do the work for your body.   

Therapists that have a high level of knowledge about anatomy and physiology and chemistry.  The oils we are using are effectively chemicals, as they are in their purest form.  This is another reason why it is very important to ensure any aromatherapist you visit has a reasonable education in the field.  It is also important to let your therapist know about skin conditions, high blood pressure and any other medical conditions.
